Option 1: Convert in your browser (no install)

Option 2: Use Windows’ built-in apps

Windows can open HEIC photos once Microsoft’s HEIF Image Extensions is installed from the Microsoft Store. Some photos also need HEVC Video Extensions, which is a paid add-on in the Store.

  1. Install HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store if HEIC files don’t open.
  2. Right-click the HEIC file and choose Open with > Paint.
  3. In Paint, choose File > Save as > PNG picture and save.

This works one photo at a time. If you can’t install the extensions (for example on a managed work PC), use the browser converter above.

Why won’t Windows open my HEIC file?

Windows needs Microsoft’s HEIF Image Extensions (and sometimes HEVC Video Extensions) to read HEIC. Without them, use the browser converter on this page.

Does this work on Windows 10 and Windows 11?

Yes. The browser converter works in current versions of Edge, Chrome and Firefox on both.
